Fifteen-year-old Linda Lam struck double gold at the Karate Ontario Championships last month held at Humber College.
Lam was awarded gold medals in kumite - fighting - and kata, or form in the girls 14-15 category.

"It's a bonus," Lam said of the medals. "I picture it as a bonus. You try your best."

"It's not about winning. It's to learn... if you throw your best out, later you find ways to improve it, make it better."

Lam, who recently earned her brown belt, studies Goju Ryu karate at Kingsview Village Community School. She is humble about the achievement and stresses the work of her sensei, Ken Jacobs, and the tough level of competition at the event.

"This is the cream of the crop. It is the highest level," said Jacobs. "There's no softies in there."

The win at the provincial championships was not Lam's first gold, but "one of the hardest." Competing on the provincial stage was an important goal for her, and one she met at the first opportunity.

"I saw great fighters since I was a kid, so to be just as high as them is amazing, knowing that you're high enough for it," she said.

Lam hopes to parlay the provincial victories into a spot on the Ontario team and a chance to compete at the nationals next year. In the short term, she has an upcoming tournament in March to prepare for, and will attempt to reach black belt in the summer.

She's waiting the year to go to the nationals to better prepare, and to focus on her studies. Lam said that her education is important to her - she wants to be a doctor.

"She's a fantastic kid," said Jacobs. "Been to her house, know her parents. She's a straight A student. She's worked hard. She's a great kid for her parents. She works hard at everything she does."

Besides her schoolwork and spending several hours a week improving her karate, Lam keeps busy by swimming and playing badminton, adding that she likes to be active and stay fit.

When asked what was her key to victory, Lam offered some simple advice.

"Stay calm out there. And drink a lot of water," she laughed.
